Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/28/2010

Number: 300

Over the last 6 years I've been able to observe the monarchs roosting in the evergreen trees or in the apricot tree next to the evergreens. They gather thickest at dusk and depart just after they dry their wings from the morning dew. This particular sighting I observed several hundred and in years past this has been the precursor to the main migration a week to 10 days later when thousands roost.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum 300 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “several hundred.”
