Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/31/2010

Number: 1

On ragged wings faded to parchment gold, the Monarch sipped dawn nectar from the garden flowers, then headed southwest flying low to the ground. During the day, I witnessed several other Monarchs of young rich orange following the path of my morning visitor. Tonite brought me two new visitors, a bright new Monarch and another faded to nearly white. The young one zipped about inspecting every branch for the night's lodging before settling in a chokecherry's overhang. The old one seemed to struggle just to stay airborne flying low amidst the goldenrod. It settled gratefully to rest beneath the leaves of a young catalpa. While today's observing only blessed me with 7 sets of wings; each time I marvel at the long journey before such soft, fragile wings at the mercy of storms and so many other obstacles. My observation time: I was watching for _12__ hours and ___ minutes.
