A late report. I was on Monhegan Island, Maine, Aug 8-15 (it's a small island 10 miles off the mid-Maine coast and very oceanic), and saw up to 25 monarchs at once. They were abundant in open areas in the village and in a dense thistle and sow thistle patch (Cirsium, Sonchus) by a cove at the southern end of the island. The photo at the URL below shows the patch. I also saw one oviposit on a very small milkweed seedling along the village road. Monarchs were doing well on Monhegan this year.
