Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/01/2010

Number: 1

FIRST SIGHTING OF THE SEASON: I viewed a Monarch butterfly resting on a butterfly weed in our kitchen patio today at about 12:00 noon CDT. There have been a lot of other butterflies in our yard, some larger, others smaller. But this one was so easy to spot. I screamed with joy to spot it. Then, I saw that my Monarch's wings were worn out, especially the left one. It was almost see-through, looked ragged. I imagined how far little Monarch has traveled and wonder how far it will go. Will it make it to the southern destination? I'm glad I've kept the 12 butterfly weeds watered. Some are tall and spindly, others are low and full. Some are blooming, some will do so soon. I'm thrilled to have hosted little Monarch. My observation time: I was watching for 2 hours and ___ minutes.
