Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/28/2010

Number: 1000

The flight of monarchs are about two weeks early this year, if this is the major migration. I estimate over a thousand monarchs. The road that my farm is on we observed many in flight, more than usual . With the dryness we are experiencing I see more along the creek. The butterfly garden at my farm market and flower shop, it is fun to watch 50 to 100 butterflies on the bushes in the evening.
The roost has been in a field that I plant broom corn as well as a half acre that I have several type of milkweed.( I inspect for eggs and caterpillars ).
Reproduction is average.
I have observed the highest amount of Viceroy butterflies population this year.
Some concern that some farms in my area have planted BT corn.
