Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/27/2010

Number: 1000

9/8/2010- Some of the butterflies hung around for the day but a lot of them came in at dusk. We had a pine tree coved in them by morning.(I have included the picture). You have to look really close cause they almost look like leaves. In the moring, the pine tree was covered and some in the maple tree (the other picture). I am guessing there was about 300-500.

9/7/2010- We had a lot of winds that day and they seemed to hang on one tree for most of the day. There was only about 100-150.

9/6/2010- Not a whole lot of wind today, dusk came and only a couple butterflies were spotted. The temps warmed up to 80's. (50-75). I think the roosting is coming to an end.

9/5/2010-temps warmed up to mid 70's Still some roosting going on but the majority of the butterflies had left. (maybe 300 or so)

9/4/2010-They seemed to hang on the tree for most of the day-it was colder that day high of 65. The wind was blowing and gusting about 20 mph's Looked like most of them hung around for the night.

9/3/2010- Noticed quite a bit of butterflies hanging around all day. It was really windy that day and it seemed if the wind gave one big gust 100's would go flying. They hung most the day on the pine trees. Once dusk came noticed several coming in from different directions. Looked like this as the biggest roost we have had since we noticed them (My guess would be about 1,000 plus.

9/2/2010-Seems like there is still a couple butterflies roosting (maybe a 100 or so)

9/1//2010- Seems like there is still a couple butterflies roosting (maybe a 100 or so)

8/31/2010 Still some butterflies here but just a couple roosting spots.

8/30/2010- Still some roosting going on but a lot have seem to have left (only about 500 or so)

8/29/2010-There were still some that night but not near the amount on the 27th and 28th.

8/28/2010-It looked like the 1,000 that visited the night before came back and stayed in a couple diffrent trees. They all started to come in from all diffrent directions at dusk-7:30. Most of the butterflies joined a clump by 8:15.

We noticed them on Friday the 27th. We still have several in the night(9/1). The major roosting was on Friday 8/27. I would estimate close to 1,000.
