Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/03/2010

Number: 1

The hummingbirds continue to feed often and noisily at our two feeders. I have also seen them at our petunias and other flowers. Last week our weather was hot - in the 90s - but it has dramatically cooled down this week. We have 20-30 mph WNW winds today, and I felt sure the hummingbirds would begin their journey south with this tailwind. But I have been watching them struggle all day against the wind to get to the feeders, so they must not be quite ready to leave yet. I finally had to take one of the feeders down as it was being so terribly buffeted by the wind, so I hung it on the other side of the house where it was protected from the wind. Within an hour I saw a hummingbird feeding from it - gratefully, I must assume.
