Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/03/2010

Number: 1

We have many male and female Red Throated Hummingbirds coming to our two glass feeders. I mix my own syrup of 4 parts water and one part cane sugar. I heat about 40 oz total for about 3 minutes in our microwave, mix, and cool. AFter cool, I put it aside. About once a week, I put hot water in a 3 gal. pail and add 2 cups vinegar, this I use to clean my feeders before putting my syrup in. The hummers like a clean feeders and will use the feeder quite often until almost dark. One of the feeders is on a shepard's hook on a wood fence and the other on a high shepards hook in our garden. Each feeder has red silk flowers next to them to draw the attention for the hummers. Within a week or so all the hummers will be migrated south and we will wait until next April to start all over again. We really enjoy our hummers as well as the Robins who are already migrated.
