Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/03/2010

Number: 1000

In the evening of 09/03/10, approximately 6:46 p.m. CT, I observed hundreds of monarchs attaching themselves to the lower and upper branches of an Ash tree in our yard. We took some photographs. I encouraged our three boys to come take a look and in amazement we discovered even more of the butterflies throughout the canopy of the tree. The next a.m. we observed dozens of monarchs as they flew to the west side of our property and sunned themselves in the morning sun. They were very active, and sensed our presence at about 8 feet, flitting away from our approach. Butterflies in the tree eight feet up didn't move as readily. The temperature here is cool, with overnight lows in the upper 40s to lower 50's. I would estimate that in the past 12 hours we have seen close to 1000 monarchs in our yard and every few minutes another passes by the window somewhere around our house.
