Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/04/2010

Number: 300

September 9
Only 1 lone monarch remained this evening. When I saw the weather prediction, I knew they would move on with the NW wind. When I counted mid- morning there were 150+ but as the day warmed up they left.

September 8
Today the weather is better. I counted 250+ monarchs at dusk. They are more scattered among the trees today. Some have moved back to the spruces and there is still a large roost on the sugar maple.

September 7
I'm behind on my reporting because my DSL went down for a day and a half. On Sept. 7 I counted 170+ monarchs. Because of the wind and rain they moved to a more protected area. They moved from the spruces by my home to a more protected sugar maple 200 feet north. My low count for Sept. 6 probably reflects that move. There was a large clump on the maple.

September 6
Yesterday I reported an estimate of 75-100 monarchs, but I rechecked at twilight and found 250-300 monarchs on two white spruce trees. I also talked to my neighbor this morning and he roughly estimates he had over 100 monarchs roosting on a tree yesterday.
Today at twilight I estimate we had 90-110 roosting on one tree. My neighbor had a few flying around, but we found no large roosting group in his trees.

September 5
Today I counted 80+ monarchs. There were two clusters on a white spruce and two smaller clusters on a maple. Only a couple were flying around. The weather was cooler and rainy.

September 4
I was looking northward from my home office window and noticed a few monarchs roosting. Then I noticed what looked like dead leaves, but I realized they were even more monarchs. But I knew they couldn't be leaves because it was a spruce tree. When I walked out to take pictures I noticed another tree around the corner had even more. At this time I estimate 75-100 on several branches. -- lb
