Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/01/2010

Report from the Monarch Butterfly Research Project on Stonington Peninsula, Rapid River, MI.

On 9-1-10 we had a huge group of monarchs gather at the Point. There was probably 1500 to 2000 monarchs. This was the largest group I have ever seen in my past 12 years of monitoring. They arrived during the day with warm temperatures near 72 and a strong north wind. They were flying around the Point from ground level up into the sky as far as you could see. It was amazing! By early evening just about all had left the Peninsula headed south. My observation time: I was watching for 6 hours.
