We had a VERY exciting experience in our classroom at Frederic Elementary School. We combined our monarch caterpillar and new technology to create an exciting learning opportunity. We had a caterpillar in a jar that we knew was getting close to hatching. I used our new document camera to take pictures of the chrysalis every 10 minutes throughout the night, incase it hatched. But when we returned the next day, it had not. We kept the projector and Smartboard on all day with the document camera focused on the chrysalis. I was just about to give up and was actually reaching to unplug the camera with just minutes left in the school day when a student yelled it was hatching. We called in other classes and watched the hatching on the "Big" screen. It is saved on a flash drive, and the students that would like a copy to share at home can simply copy it to their flash drives! What excitement. Our next opportunity comes with two remaining caterpillars that we would like to catch the live action footage of one or both forming their chrysalis! I had to take this buttefly home to release due to the time and holiday weekend.
