Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/05/2010

Number: 1

This morning the meadow shimmered with flat, round blossoms for as far as you could see into the bright sun. In the center of each bloom a spider waited hopefully. It must be hard to be a sleepy Monarch skimming along at that level! I counted 5 Monarchs dancing thru the maze of webs. Later, mid-afternoon, the air glittered with a confetti of tiny butterflies in shades of yellow and white. The air sparkled as they danced tight circling dances and spiraled up and down. On a higher flight path, dragon flies, their heavy bodies suspended on gossamer wings, thrummed steadily soutbound. Dragon traffic has been very heavy this week, too. Bright and glowing, the Monarchs vectored through the traffic jam, wind ruffled, tip tilting, southward bound. Total 14 spotted for today. No sign of migrators between Grand Haven and Ludington or along the edge of Lake Michigan. My observation time: daily sunup to sundown.
