Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/06/2010

Number: 50

September 9
Went to the timber today and found several groups of 1/2 dozen to a full dozen roosting together. I caught a few that were on lower branches to tag but all the rest were in pretty high places! Its quite cloudy and cooler today and the Monarchs seemed slow and in the trees a bit earlier than the last few days. The few that I did catch were very active in the net & when released again went back to the trees.

I was at Master Gardener Class last night but the kids said there were 'tons' of Monarchs flying into the trees to roost. They said they were really up high so they didn't count any. I see many many more traveling through our acreage today as well. Will try to get some pictures tonight of the roosts as well as get some counts. May try to get a few more tagged also.

Small groups but they're roosting! I bought my own tags this year from monarchwatch.com and have tagged several already! The monarchs that I have tagged already are feeding on thistle that is late blooming.

We live on 20 acres of timber and natural prairie grass. We have oodles of common milkweed, solidago, thistle (our area farmers would love to douce it with Round Up) and lots of trees for roosting! Just last week we received our Certificate of Appreciation for creating and maintaining a monarch waystation from MonardWatch.org.

Editor's Note: This observer did not specify the number of monarchs present. We entered '50' in the number field based on observer’s “Small groups.”
