Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/04/2010

Number: 200

I saw them Sunday about 11:30 a.m. (9/5) We found what seemed like hundreds of monarchs fluttering around and landing in the arbor vitae near our house. This was a sheltered area. It seemed like they maybe were seeking shelter. The weather was sunny, around 74 degrees F., but also quite windy (from the South)which I think was the reason they decided to pause here in rural Cascade,Iowa for the day. It was really a beautiful sight. My observation time: I was watching for 1hours and ___ minutes.

They were still around, but not quite so many the next day (9/6); they must have roosted there for the night.

Editor's Note: We dated this roost sighting for Sept. 4, the night the roost formed. For consistency, we use the 'first night' date for all roosts even if they are not discovered until the following morning.)We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “hundreds.”
