Hummingbird Sighting

Hey All,

I just wanted to chime in that the last of the Ruby Throat-ed Hummer family has now headed south. I had just changed out the feeder with new (Ready to Use) RTU food and one or two of the young came up immediately. I placed the new glass feeder in the Cherry tree and they then swapped feeders, with the mother taking up the protection of the old feeder.

No sooner had we made the change, then the cold front moved through. 4 hours later the night time temperatures dropped below 65 Deg. F and the humidity to below 40%, thus the return to the South was necessary. There should be good flying weather, as the front stretched all the way to the Gulf. This would allow them to ride the NE breezes south and avoid any tropical weather.

With TS Hermine having moved through S. TX, my hope is that the earlier departures were not there yet. As to the local crew, I would expect them to put in about 15 miles per day as they hopscotch south looking for feeders along the way. I am leaving my feeders up for another two weeks to insure that there is food for any laggards. I will likely take it in the 20th of Sept. and will not rehang it until the first Sat. of March 2011.

Cheers!
Dave Cooke
