Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/07/2010

Number: 1

As I was sitting here at my computer desk a little while ago I saw a Monarch fly by and land in my zinnia garden. I went out the back door with camera in hand and my tagging materials. A blue & yellow swallowtail seemed to be territorial about the zinnia's but I'll have to look that up! They seem to be right next to the Monarch, sort of chasing it away from the flowers. I approach it after it landed on a second flower for some nectar and it decided to leave. I followed it in the air walking straight south on our acreage. I walked the last two acres of the yard and it proceeded to fly quite quickly straight south over our prairie grass and then the bean field. I am amazed at how much distance it accomplished in such a short amount of time!
