Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/04/2010

Number: 200

The morning of the 5th, we discovered a roost of Monarchs in the maple and witch hazel trees in our backyard.Estimated a couple hundred in 3 groups. Had noticed a few monarchs in the days previous, but no large numbers. Temperature was mild-mid 70's, but very windy out of the south. Interesting to note they roosted on the north side of the trees-out of the wind. Kept watching off and on all day and pleased to see they were still there the next morning. Again, it was very windy and they didn't seem very active. A few were feeding on sedums in the garden. As the 2nd day progressed, there were fewer & fewer to be seen and by the morning of the 7th, the large numbers were gone.

Editor's Note: We dated this roost sighting for Sept. 4th, the night the roost must have formed. (For consistency, we use the 'first night' date for all roosts, even if they are not discovered until the following morning.)
