Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/08/2010

Number: 1

In our corner of NE Iowa, very close to the Minnesota border, I have seen a dramatic increase in monarchs since a cold front moved in on Friday, Sept. 3. On my own property, I counted approx. 60 while out horseback riding. On one occasion, 10 were feeding on one small butterflyweed plant in my home garden, and 5-7 on the same species of milkweed growing alongside the public library where I work (9 miles away). This plant is the only one that I know of for several blocks around in the city, so it's amazing how they happened to find it in this concrete world! I continue to see monarchs in much larger numbers that during the summer, as the week progresses. My observation time: I was watching for ~2 hours___ hours and__ minutes.
