We visited the site where we had observed monarchs roosting 2 weeks earlier, but - not surprisingly - there were none. In fact temperatures were in the low teens (C), with rain showers, and winds gusting up to 60 km/hr from the WSW across Lake Huron. Off the shoreline, butterflies in twos and threes struggled to land in the blowing tree branches. But on Monday the sun came out, temperatures reached 15 degrees C and the winds, though still very gusty, shifted favourably. Monarchs wafted in a steady stream down the sheltered roadway toward the lakeshore at varying heights and at more than one every minute - it was quite a show.
