Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/08/2010

Number: 1

Now that it has been over 24 hours since TS Hermine has gone to the north of us, the extreme wind and rain around has come to an end, but we still have Ruby-throated Humming Birds in good numbers. For a few hours yesterday morning there were only three or four hummers around after the 70 mph winds but by late afternoon there were 12 to 15 in the backyard at the plants, esp the Turk's caps and red pentas, plus the eight feeders. Today the number has held pretty steady at that number. It is hard to get an accurate count because so many are spread across the yard at the different plants ... even watched one thru binoculars across the yard nectaring on a hibiscus yesterday. Still think the number will increase over the next week ... will see! We've been having a pretty stiff SE wind after Hermine went 75 miles west of us up I-37 to San Antonio then up I-35 to Oklahoma. Texas had a great deal of rain in the eastern 2/3rds ... will be good for nectaring plants for monarchs, too late to help much for RTHummers ... but a norther sure would give the hummers a tail wind next week after all this head wind!
