Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/07/2010

Number: 200

At 6:30 pm we observed hundreds of monarch butterflies in our backyard trees, resting in clusters. I took photographs at 6:50 to 7:15 PM. I observed for an hour. The next morning, around 100 of them were still here, and I took more pictures at 8:00 AM. As the sun reached them, they would soon open wings and fly away--the backyard is shady in the morning so some were still here at 8:30 AM, but all left by 8:45 AM. My observation time: I was watching for _1__ hours and _45__ minutes.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “hundreds.”
