Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/08/2010

Number: 1

We are seeing our best migration in several years. We have data from the last 10 years.

September 14
Monarchs were migrating past our lake front campus at the rate of over 1,000 per hour from around 9:00 AM until around 4:00PM. I would estimate 7-10,000 for the day. Philip Arnholt Concordia University Wisconsin My observation time: I was watching for _0__ hours and __10_ minutes.I counted for several 10 minute periods and averaged 85 per ten minute period.

I was out today and we have a major monarch movement again. We are on the western most shore of Lake Michigan and when the wind is form the northwest the monarchs funnel down along the shoreline to avoid being blown out over the lake. I had a botany class out this morning to study prairie plants but counted around 20 migrating monarchs in less than a minute.
