Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/02/2010

Number: 1

Adult female Black-Chinned hummingbird has claimed the trumpet vine and the two feeders as her own, all summer - except when an adult female Rufous zooms in to challenge her, or sneaks in on the opposite side of the huge trumpet vine, for a sip. Lots of buzzing and chirping! Today I actually saw the adult Black-Chinned and a small female Black-Chinned sitting quietly across from each other, on separate twigs of the trumpet vine. Mother and daughter? The Rufous of past seasons would chase her offspring away from these food sources, but the Black-Chinned seems more mellow and excepting. They are all such characters!
