Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/11/2010

Number: 1

The Monarch Butterfly Fall Migration started here on August 28. It has continued ever since with some days being heavier than others. Today, between 12:30 and 1:10 PM, I counted the Monarchs as they flew southward over the bank on the east side of Lake Huron. They were clearly following the lakeshore about 20 meters inland from the water's edge, where there is much vegetation. I had a good view from the top of the bank where I could see over the vegetation and out to the water's edge. I took three measurements. The rate of Monarch Butterflies passing was 7 per minute (equivalent to 1 every 11.6 seconds or 420 per hour). My observation time: I was watching for __0_ hours and __40_ minutes.
