Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/11/2010

Number: 1

This week I've seen the hummingbird population--Ruby throated-- at my feeders dwindle to just a few per day. Seeing mostly males it seems. Maybe that is the reason for the frantic frenzy a couple weeks ago with females fighting over the feeders; they seem to have gone already, so I assume they were preparing for their long journey. The weather here has cooled considerably in the last week, hovering at about 70 degrees F most of the week, with evenings in the mid sixties. So it appears that the slightly chilly weather is an indication it's time for them to leave. My husband remarked as we have also seen the Canadian Geese migrating, that maybe this is a signal to the hummers that they too must go.
