Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/11/2010

Number: 1

There were hundreds of Monarch butterflies all over Fairfield, Iowa today. I first noticed them sunning themselves on the hot gravel parking lot near the University campus and generally flying South-SW all day...especially over the noon to 3PM hours.

I counted 30 per 5 minutes at the peak today...that was over 300 per hour...amazing...i've never seen so many at one time before. No matter where I was doing my erends while driving around town...there the were!!! All over the sky. The wind was perfect... helping them fly south..the wind was coming out of the North and they were so happy fluttering throught the sky. The weather was perfect..a sunny, blue sky, a nice, strong breeze to help them fly south...just perfect!

I have not seen the roosting but I'm usually not out at that time. Not sure where to look or what time of the day...

It was a most wonderful and most amazing day!! It was soooo exciting! My observation time: I was watching for __1_ hours and _30__ minutes.
