Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/11/2010

Number: 1

Yesterday I saw the most amazing thing. We live on a lake in Minnesota. There has been a stiff west north west wind for the last few days, but still my hummingbirds have been here, feeding often at the feeders. My husband and I were out on the dock, and my husband said, "Look up!" Right behind and over my head were 2 hummingbirds, hovering over me. I watched them hover right above me for a while, and then the pair flew out over the lake. I couldn't figure out why - they've never done that before. Then they flew up, and around for a short while, then up again. My husband said, "They're taking off! They're flying up to catch the wind." I do believe he was right. They kept heading higher, pausing, and higher again, until I couldn't see them any more. I like to think they were saying goodbye before they left. I believe I actually got to see the moment of their departure, as they headed out for their journey south.
