Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/12/2010

Number: 1

Saw a surprising number of Monarchs on the back hills today....perhaps two or three dozen. I suspect most of them were migrants from the north that found the goldenrod back there to their liking. This evening I tried to find a roost, but all of the butterflies seemed to be locating individually. Saw a couple settle down on individual trees. Temperature was 63 when I got home, so I guess it was too warm, though about 50 is predicted for tonight. Wind was blowing from the west all day, but became almost calm by nightfall.
Also wanted to report three caterpillars found in the last three days, two this morning. 3rd of 4th instars. I brought two inside to care for them, but left the third to take its chances with mother nature. No doubt there are more out there at that stage. Butterflies would be emerging about the end of September. First frost here is Sept 20-Oct. 1......
