Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/11/2010

Number: 200

Last evening (9/11) there were hundreds of butterflies fluttering among the tree tops on the Orford Bluffs overlooking Lake Erie. Today there were an astonishing number of butterflies in the air and moving south west at the top of the cliffs through Clearville. They are all moving towards Pt Pelee National Park -50 miles to the south west from Clearville. This is where the Monarchs leave this part of Canada and cross Lake Erie to Ohio. At noon today (9/12) we counted 310 per hour flying through the park at tree top level, all flapping their wings and moving in the same direction - south west. Very few drop down to nectar. The numbers this afternoon were a little less at 250 per hour.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “hundreds.”
