Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/12/2010

Number: 300

I observed several hundred monarchs roosting in a tall tree about one kilometer from the main gate on the Leslie Street Spit. Weather conditions, partly cloudy, temperature 20C, observation occurred about two hours before sunset and there were many other monarchs still feeding nearby so I assume the roosting numbers would have increased substantially by sunset. Unfortunately I was only able to view them for a few minutes before I had to leave the area. Someone else present told me he had seen thousands near the western end of the spit the day before but of course I could not verify that sighting.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum 300 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “several hundred.”
