Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/12/2010

Number: 1

The first big push of Monarchs through Walpole Island First Nation took place Sunday. An estimate would be 5-7 thousand. It was continuous streams of Monarchs overhead all day. Taking the ferry back to the states, our attendants were indicating that many Monarch were landing on the 2 ferries hitching a ride over! The Monarchs were flying high and riding the winds. It was quite extraordinary and there sat my net as we banded hummingbirds. Of the three roosts we are now aware of, we were able to check two of these hidden treasures and there were no roosts this weekend. It is good to see all of these Monarchs once again. Walpole Island is located north of Detroit, MI on the Canadian Shores of Lake St.
Clair. A very beautiful place and much more lovely on Sunday with the Monarchs.
