Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/14/2010

Number: 1

September 19
Every night there are dozens of monarchs feeding on the groundsel tree, Baccharis halimifolia, a woody shrub in the aster family. It is growing in marshy land that is next to the bay in Ventnor, NJ. Some of the groundsel is 8-10 feet tall! The monarchs are definitely drawn to it as well as buckeyes, red admirals, skippers and ladies. My friend said she never noticed so many monarchs nectaring there before! Many of the monarchs would the land in the black cherry or white pine trees in her yard. The groundsel trees are in the marsh that lies beyond her property.

Lots of monarchs flying overhead this afternoon at the Ventnor, NJ shore. Saw 15 flying in a southerly direction between 2:50-4pm. Then sat outside and observed approximately 20-30 more fluttering around the house. Many landed in the black cherry trees and white pines in the yard. I am hoping they aren't peaking yet! My observation time: I was watching for __3_ hours and ___ minutes.

Editor's Note: This observer did not specify the number of monarchs present. We entered 'one' in the number field only to mark this record for future consideration.
