Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/14/2010

Number: 1

We drove down from Jackson to Cape May yesterday (9/14) (going south). From 4:15 to 5:15 I counted 54 monarchs while we were driving, all flying south. When we arrived the garden was 'teeming' with monarchs, buckeyes and a few red admirals. We had a small roost last night--about 100 or so monarchs. All day to day the migration here has been AWESOME! I sat on the porch this am as they dropped down out of the sky to nectar in our gardens, On the beach this afternoon we watched the show...I have to say for the first time the buckeyes are out numbering all the others about 15 to 1. We watched literally thousands of them stream by. Still there were an impressive number of monarchs (in very hearty shape I might add!!) and I am looking forward to seeing if we can find any of the larger roosts here in Cape May this eve.
My observation time: I was watching all day!
