I observed several HUNDRED monarch butterflies roosting on a handful of pitch pine (Pinus rigida) at sunset (around 7 P.M.) with more butterflies coming in every minute. As for nectar plants, Dune Rd. is a narrow strip of barrier beach seperating the Atlantic Ocean from Shinnecock Bay and there are large stands of seaside goldenrod.
Pictures can be seen at www.WildLongIsland.blogspot.com My observation time: I was watching for 0 hours and 5 minutes.
Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum 300 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “several hundred.”
