Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/09/2010

Number: 1

The same day there were so many at Presqu'ile (9/9), I had to drive to Toronto and stopped at Wicklow Beach. Within seconds of getting out of the car I became aware of large numbers of Monarchs flying west (as well as good numbers of Sharp-shins + a few other raptors). Standing at the boat launch and looking out over the jetty and lake, I estimated that about 100/minute were passing at all heights and distances out. That figure does not count any birds north of the parking lot (and there were some) where trees obscure the view. While I didn't see any clusters roosting, the numbers moving past were amazing. When I got home I heard about the Presqu'ile flight, so clearly there were 1000's in Northumberland that day.
