Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/17/2010

Number: 150

September 20
Of the 150 butterflies, All but four were gone by Sat afternoon (9/18). Those four hung on and were still there this morning the 20th but were gone by 4pm when I got home from work. It was in the 50's on Sunday and in the low 90's today...I wonder if the temperature extreme had something to do with those 4 not leaving with their group.

September 17
Around 7:30pm I noticed about 100-150 monarchs flying and landing on one of our cotton wood trees next to the house. I lightly sprayed some water on the tree next to them and saw that some of them were attracted to the water. By 8:01pm they were all settled with their wings closed and sleeping for the night! How exciting for my boys to see, as I remember back in the late 70's and early 80's at least 500-1,000 during the fall!
