Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/18/2010

Number: 1

The males are gone but I still have several female Ruby Throat hummies fighting off one another at the feeder & remaining blooming plants. They are gaining body fat & hanging very close perched on trees & shrubs close to the feeders. I have increased the sugar mixture to help them along. Night time temps here have gone down to 48 degrees.
I still have pink coral coccinea blooming & cardinal vine they are feeding on in addition to the heavier sugar water mixture in the feeders. They love the pink coral coccinea. I have my local garden center grow me two flats each spring. They are the Ruby's favor feeding flowers and are very hardy & will continue to bloom until first frost. You can harvest the seeds from the expired blooms and throw them out in the soil in spring and viola next yrs feeder plants for your hummies. They also love Bee Balm aka cardinal flower & wigelia. Very sad they are getting ready to head south.
