Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/18/2010

Number: 1

Ruby-throated Humming birds are stacking up here on the midcoast of Texas! We have had squalls coming in from the Gulf from the east since in the afternoon yesterday (2.40 in. of rain so far) with wind and there is a significant "fall out" of Ruby-throats right now. There is no way that they are going to try and head out into that wind towards the Yucatan today. Squalls are a "thank you" due to Hurricane Karl that went in as a Cat 3 near Vera Cruz yesterday. Our radar is showing more rain bands to about 150 miles southeast and south of Brownsville and then the radar sees no farther in that direction, plus almost to Houston and up to San Antonio. Altus just went out in the light rain and filled the feeder right outside the storm door. This is a feeder we esp watch and there had been ten Hummers perched and six trying to find a perch a-n-d then there were none ... the feeder suddenly went empty ... she called to let me know she was going out into the "danger zone" ... have glasses on, don't wear any red! Too much fun on a rainy Saturday.
