Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/19/2010

Number: 2000

September 22
On my evening walk tonight i discovered, in several clusters of trees running down the property line, are more butterflys. So there are thousands of them! I took a leaf of the trees and looked it up and they are Cottonwood trees.

I just arrived back home today and went and checked on the butterflys and their numbers seem to have increased to around a hundred or so that i can see visibly and low to the ground. I have a cluster of misc tree types in back pine, oak, walnut are a few and they are in about 4 of them from low to high branches. Behind the trees is an old pond site that has little water but cat tails. There are no flower clusters or any other nectar producing plants around unless im missing something. Some surrounding fields are not mowed quite as often as the rest and over grown with weeds. we have a habitat of our own back here in this neighborhood.

Strictly an observer and enjoy watching the migration come thru every year. I walked into my backyard this evening and in the tree were at least 20-30 butterfly against a golden and orange sunset. My dog and i watched them for a while and i ran and got my camera and captured a few. They stayed and some went from tree to tree as i walked closer and some stayed just opening and closing showing off their beautiful colors. My observation time: I was watching for ___ hours and __30_ minutes.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 2000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “thousands.”
