Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/18/2010

Number: 500

Around 6 pm in the evening with storm clouds to the west I observed some butterflies around my farmstead. Looking closer I realized that the tree branches were covered with monarch butterflies. I didn't have the best lens (i.e., 50mm normal lens) in my camera, but still took pictures for about 30 minutes of the butterfly aggregates. My best estimate would be 300-500 butterflies over an area of 0.5 acres. My observation time: I was watching for 0 hours and 30 minutes.
