Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/19/2010

Number: 1

About 11:00a CDT a Ruby-throated Hummingbird dive-bombed into a group of white Nicotiana sylvestris blossoms, and tried for 15-20 seconds to force open a wilted blossom with its bill, although there was a perfect, fresh blossom just a few inches away. It never did try that one! Then it went to THE last blossom on a neighboring honeysuckle vine, then into a white Butterfly Bush, where it must have gotten some food, enough to keep it busy for 20-30 seconds--then off into the Wild Blue. Couldn't tell sex or age. We are seeing more of them now than we did all spring or summer! Every few days we spot one. Seems kinda late to me, esp with the nasty weather we're having: highs in the mid- to high 60s, nights down to mid-50s, gray, cloudy, sunshine very occasionally. There are many native prairie plants around, and I think there must be some yummies for the birds there (fingers crossed...).
