Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/20/2010

Number: 1000

September 25
On Sept 24 I returned to the roost in the evening to watch them come in and then returned before sunrise on Sept 25. The morning of the 25th was much cooler than previous mornings so they stayed longer. It was 51F versus 68F on previous mornings. There were approximately 800-1000 monarchs.

I went back the evening of the 21st and the morning of the 22nd and they were there again. There is a row of cedar trees on IL DNR property there they roost in and across the road. This ground was set aside for the greater prairie-chicken. There is a huge nectar source next to these trees. The first morning I was there, when they left the roost they would fly directly to the nectar source. It's mostly goldenrod and Helianthus sp. one plant for sure is Sawtooth Sunflower Helianthus grosserratus. I haven't been able to return again. There is a major cold front going through this weekend so I thought I would return. I have a feeling this has been a historic roost site, but it's very remote and on a road with no houses. A friend of mine happen to drive by in the evening and saw them flying around and called me.

Approximately 300-400 monarchs roosting in cedar trees along a country road.
