Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/18/2010

Number: 3000

September 19
Few Monarchs remain in my yard today. As the morning temperatures became warm, the thousands roosting in my trees left, bucking a wind from the south. No roosting Monarchs to report... it was a one night event.

September 18
Saw several hundred coming to roost in my wooded yard in the evening of 9/18. Took lots of pictures... next morning checked on them and found several thousand butterflies in clumps in many more trees not noticed the night before. Wind was from the northeast. My observation time: I was watching for 2 hours.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating 3000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “several thousand.”
