Thirteen good sized Monarch caterpillars in the garden this morning. One was crawling away from the milkweed, probably ready to start the process of metamorphosis, something I have never seen, but will keep looking. Several adult Monarchs have come through in the past few days but their numbers are smaller this year...at least in my yard (100 acres with large unmown fields and lots of milkweed). A friend who lives 5 miles from here has had MANY Monarchs, TONS of caterpillars and for the first time SHE has found 3 chrysalises. My observation time: I was watching for ___ hours and _15__ minutes.
