Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/22/2010

Number: 1

I have been watching..waiting.......only occasional sightings for the last 5 or 6 days. My home is located about 20 to 30 miles south of Cherry Gap Cove on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a low pass used by the monarchs. Today, two waves of monarchs passed through, from about 3:00 to 5:00. Skies had become overcast and there were scattered showers in the area, though none here. I counted 100 quickly..............I am sure our area saw many hundreds in two waves..........my husband and a friend confirmed from two other close locations. A few monarchs lighted briefly in trees as a larger cloud and mist formed, and one of our four resident hummingbirds was observed challenging a resting monarch for his territory . Skies cleared about 5:30, no more butterflies today. My observation time: I was watching for __4_ hours and ___ minutes.
