Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/23/2010

Number: 1

We have six feeders out and have photo across each and the backyard and have come up with a maximum number of Ruby-throated humming birds we think are visiting our backyard yesterday and today. That maximun would be around 126 for the yard but we were thinking closer to 90 or 100. Altus is filling three feeders every two to three hours, bought sugar yesterday, and just said she needs to buy sugar this afternoon again. The buzzzz from the wings is like a bug in your ears and the chitttering of their calls is like the trees full of cicadas at three feet. I can be three feet away and they almost fly thru me. The peak is yet to come, yesterday was the largest and Altus filled all the feeders at 9:30. Fun, yes, you may quote Altus! AND they are all over the flowers she has so patiently slaved over! There is a cool front coming Sunday and that may push these RT's off to the Yucatan or down towards Mexico, but it has been a grand ten days! SO MANY ON THE FLOWERS in the backyard, we would never would have believed that plus 80+ at the feeders ... a lifetime of RT's ... we've been afraid to put up more feeders! Maybe I'll go out and handhold one!
