Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/23/2010

Number: 1

The monarchs were feeding on shepherd needle flowers in a field about half an acre.

There were about 200 of them. The wind direction at the time was east at 20 mph. It was like that for about a week. My observation time: I was watching for 45 minutes.

It was really a surprise for me to see them. But I hadn't really looked before. I will be sure to notice from now on. I didn't think we had monarchs here.

The flowers they were feeding on are sheperds needles, they would stay on the flowers for about 40 seconds then move to the next one. At one point I saw one try to light on another monarch and they both flew to about 10 feet and started fighting or playing I don't know which.

Here are some photos. In the top photo that flower is not the sheperds needle. I am not sure what that one is.
