During a visit of one hour and 15 minutes to Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, 65 monarchs were observed. Once again, many of them were in the savanna area of the refuge where they were nectaring on hillside flowers and resting on oak tree branches. A visit on September 21 showed 139 monarchs in the same general area. Rain and strong winds have hampered monarch movements in recent days.
