Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/23/2010

Number: 1

i was mowing yard when i thought I saw leaves in the air - it was a breezy day. They i realized it was monarchs - LOTS of monarchs. They were in the trees/bushes resting on the leaves. It was so exciting i watched for several minutes and kept going back to see if they were still there. Fist thing this morning - the 24th - I went out to see if they were still there and they are still here.

We had a cold front come in on Friday night the 24th and when I went out Sat. morning to check the monarchs I only had a few "strays" maybe 6 or 7. So they were only here 2 or 3 days that I was aware of them. As far as a nectar source it didn't seem that they were doing anything except resting. I have a lot of painted lady butterflies at my flowers but never saw the monarchs anyplace except on the leaves of the trees and some large bushes we have with red berries on them. I even put out water source thinking maybe they would go to it and they didn't. They just sat/clung to the leaves with wings folded up as if they were resting.

Editor's Note: This observer did not specify the number of monarchs present. We entered 'one' in the number field only to mark this record for future consideration.
